Breath – pranayama or life force – plays an important role in nourishing the body and medical researchers agree. As we go throughout our day we are typically breathing in a very shallow way which is a marker of STRESS. Just taking a few deep breaths can reduce tension in the body and relieve STRESS. It’s an extra boost of oxygen and oxygen heals which makes total sense, without oxygen, we would not be here.
A really simple breathing technique that I use often is Single Nostril Breathing. Place your index finger on your right nostril closing it up and inhale through your left nostril. Hold for a second and place your index finger on your left nostril and exhale through the right nostril. Repeat this process for 1 – 3 minutes and see how calm you feel. Getting more oxygen into your body is key to reducing STRESS and nourishing your body. I used oxygen therapy as part of my cancer treatment and practice yoga 5-6 days a week.
